Time for La Plata to vote on the SuperWalmart

On April 9th the residents of the Town of La Plata can vote to either approve or deny the annexation of the land across from the Lowes and Giant.  If they approve the annexation then the Superwalmart can be built.  Why do they need this in the first place?  Because they can not build on well and septic and making this part of the town gives them water and sewer hookup.  What are they going to do with the old walmart if this is approved?  The developers and walmart are already working on stores to fill the space in the event it is approved.  One plan is to cut the building in to three or more stores, put a new facade on it and bring Kohls in plus others.  It would also help fill the Rosewick Crossing shopping center and bring alot of other new stores.  The vote will take place at the La Plata town hall from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.  To read more about it visit the website above.

UPDATE 4-10-2014  The town of La Plata has rejected the annexation.

I think it's a good idea. We need more shopping options in LaPlata.

No plan but we would love to find them a space.

I have sent Joes information to come down but they never responded.

Would this connect to the current Wakmart for better traffic flow or be broken up like the Target shopping Center and Food Lion shopping center?

I wouldn't like to see a home goods store or similar type

There is a property between the two that is owned by someone else so there will be no connection. The current entrance to Mitchells will be the back entrance to the new Walmart.

This is BAD for La Plata. SAVE LA PLATA!!!

Chris Shasho said...

Please explain your feelings. What makes it bad?

Walmart is bad for Laplata. Low paying jobs. Low quality products. Traffic,Traffic,Trafic. The only people supporting this have a financial interest......Vote No

There already is one this would just be bigger. Also the rest of the County offers the same type of jobs. All this does is provide EXPANDED shopping options and more jobs. Until the County pursues high paying jobs it is what it is. But even if they did there is still a need for a project like this. Saying no doesnt do anyone any good. It's not like if they dont build it the County will put in a high rise office building so people don't have to commute to DC or NOVA anymore. Saying no turns down the construction jobs and then more jobs after construction. Nobidy wins by rejecting it.

I noticed the bennigan's building is ready being worked on. Any word?

The walmart will also be farther away from the main part of the town and generate tax revenue. It gives people that can't drive all over for their supplies, like senior citizens a one stop shopping experience when they are on a tight budget. They are the ones supporting it because they need it to survive. When they retire they go and work there part time. We need the jobs. Not everyone can afford to shop at Safeway or Giant.

Bennigans is being taken over by The American Steakhouse.

Anonymous needs to quit being so negative.

Oh well, the measure was Rejected. No surprise. Some people do not embrace change, even if it is a good thing.

True, and what they don't realize is that walmart could still find another location and move out of the current store and they will still have a vacant building. But next time there is no money going to the town if it does not get filled up. Kind of shot themselves in the foot.

I am sure we shot somebody in the foot but it wasn't ourselves! Walmart can do whatever they need to do, most of the people shopping there don't live in the town limits anyways.... Just sayin'

Wow, surprise at the outcome. This means I'll have to continue driving through LaPlata to shop at the King George, VA Super Walmart. SMH.
