September Updates

Back from vacations and back to school!  Hope everyone had a wonderful summer. September updates have begun!

I would also like to take a minute to mention something here that I may have talked about on Facebook but I don't think I spoke about on the blog.  I bring it up because the Charles County EDC has now mentioned it as well.
As you know the things we say especially on social media can effect businesses we have here and businesses we could get here.  Potential prospects look thru social media posts and speak to residents before they decide to plant a flag here.  If all they hear is negativity they aren't going to come.  So please think before you speak or post.  Every city has its issues but some people tend to make them much larger than they really are.  Take pride in where you live.  Help make it a great place to be.  And tell your kids to do the same. #charlescountyproud #mycharlescounty

Is there any update on Arby's coming to St Charles Towne Plaza? Banners are still up but seems like there has been zero progress. Is that off the books or do they still plan to open? Also any update on Shopper's. Looks like on the landlord's website they show that space as available. If so, that is a huge vacancy for someone to try and fill.

Waiting on the shopping center to answer me about the shoppers food. As far as I know Arbys is still on the way.

A YMCA would be good.

Or a county/city Fitness & Aquatics Center, like the Edward T. Hall one over in Calvert but with a gym. Who can ask in the local government to bring the community something like this: http://www.sjc.utah.gov/parks-recreation/fitness-and-aquatic-center/

Any updates on Circle K

If I remember correctly, and its been a while, YMCA said we didnt qualify for a center. I could be wrong.

Circle K has been silent. No updates on that.

Email your commissioners for them to look into new county facilities. That is something they would have to budget for far in advance.

Hi Chris, thanks for your updates. Any idea what is being built in Clinton, between the BBT bank and the Legion lodge on Piscataway Road? It was the old miller football/soccer field. Lots of evacuation at the site.

Why is it that Charles County, Waldorf in particular, is fast becoming that place you pass through to get to Leonardtown or Lexington Park? Why are all the good stores and restaurants going south of us? We have no dining experiences in Charles County—welcome to the chain gang restaurant area where no business owner wants to experiment with an off-301 location. We have less than appealing grocery experiences lacking amenities we see elsewhere like restaurants with bars in the store like those in VA, DC, TX, etc.—blame the restrictive beer and wine laws in the state and county. How do we fix this? Different county commissioners, vote out all the current people in those positions? They certainly are not doing us any favors and seem unable to woo any new businesses to the area. The average income in Waldorf is higher than Leonardtown. We have a population to support better options than we currently have. We need a business environment to match that.

So Minuteman78, have you been to Rucci's, Napoli's, Simply Good, Galazeo's to name a few? And we just got a brewery though it fought long and hard to open but maybe it was a learning experience for the commissioners. I don't know if we need anything else new. Heck, take the scenic drive and support the local businesses between here Pax River, too.

Hi Chris, I know I asked before but have you heard anything on affordable housing for Seniors in Waldorf, or should I say are they building more Senior apartments in the County?

Chris Shasho said...

There are some groups looking into doing more senior housing. I believe apartments were part of the plan as well. Looking at areas of St. Charles.

We have a good group of commissioners that are committed to working on bringing new business to the area. I'm not sure how the liquor sales are dealt with as far as where it can be sold. I never really thought about it. We have many local business owners with fine restaurants and more coming online now. Lucianna's is one example. Silver skewers is another great place.

Any update on Chicken Rico? They seem to have stalled out on their rebuild.

Chris Shasho said...

Ive seen their plans they are still full steam ahead. They are making changes to the building HVAC and other items so its not just fixing the fire damage.

Thank you Chris for these updates. They are really good things to know. And I saw your reminder about social media and negativity. That makes a lot of sense. We don't know who is watching our area and we want new business to want to come here. I know I do. Don't want to have to travel 50 or more miles for things. Remind us often.

What are the chances of getting a half decent grocery store in the northern part of St Mary's county?

Hi Chris, the ever evol ing subject of food... grocery stores and restaurants. The Charles Co is mostly a bedroom community where a lot of residents are working out of the county. Yes we have bunch of chain restaurants and food stores, but we need the grocery stores, where we can grab and go read to eat fresh meals. That what can be found in Wegmans, Whole Foods.

Chris Shasho said...

I dont see any other grocery stores in the near future for either area besides whats already been announced. Higher end requires more population.
