Lidl Grocery Coming to Waldorf

Lidl has just purchased a 9 acre parcel for a new grocery store in Waldorf.  The Property is located at the corner of Smallwood Drive and St. Patrick's Drive across the street from the County Library.  The project is in its planning stage so there is no opening date.

Lidl is a German discount supermarket based in NeckarsulmGermany.  It operates over 10,000 stores across Europe and approximately 52 so far in the United States.  It is very similar to an Aldi Market and it's their biggest competitor.  More details as the project progresses.

UPDATE: Ground clearing has started
June 2019-They have started putting up walls

Worst intersection ever but happy they are coming to Charles County

Are they still bringing a location to Brandywine?

Chris Shasho said...

No they pulled out of that deal and one in laplata.

We definitely need better restaurants. Any good ones coming soon? would love to have a OF Chang's or an authentic Mexican or cheesecake factory

You're asking a question that's been asked a thousand times. There's even a blog post somewhere on this page explaining why that won't happen, since it's been asked so much. This area doesn't have the daytime population to make it a viable area for those places.

Did they give a reason for pulling out of the La Plata location?

Can we get some decent stores in the mall? St Charles Mall is starting to look bad...almost reminds me of forestville mall (which is almost empty) and Iverson Mall (which btw, I'm excited for their revamping and hope that they will get better stores.)

instead of PF Chang's go to Kobe or Kidori, you want real Mexican? go to Los Compadres, you want Cheesecake Factory go to Silver Diner.

I'd love to see a trader joes in Charles county future!

Support local businesses like Napoli's, Rucci's, Casey Jones, etc. They all have good food. If you don't like your choices, go elsewhere and contribute to their crappy traffic.

Wonder if they will pull out after hiring staff like they did in Brandywine...

Chris Shasho said...

They never purchased the property in Brandywine but they have in Waldorf so it will move forward.

Why is it everytime something new comes they literally pick the worst, most inconvenient location? That's a ridiculous intersection to put something like that at. Nothing wrong with a stand alone location (although there is way too much of that in Waldorf too) - but at least pick one that makes sense.

We are running out of large parcels of good land with water and sewer to the site. Markets are very picky about who their neighbors are and when they are inline they impose a lot of restrictions on the other tenants. Makes it very hard to lease the other empty spaces.

I guess this is needed around here even tho there's more than enough grocery stores as it is. How come something like a water park or a go kart track is never a consideration of things to have built around here? I've lived in this area my whole life and wished there was some sort of major attraction to go to for fun.

I see that Sears is going to close 72 more stores. Is the one in Waldorf on the chopping block?

Yes let's cut down a large forest area to build an ugly grocery store.

They couldn't have moved into one of the dozens of empty buildings in waldorf? Like Burlington, once they move, or Gallo, etc.

Or even one of the empty lots. All the poor wildlife living there will be killed and forced to relocate. Horrible.

Why is the restaraunt in the mall parking lot still empty? It used to be a steakhouse..with peanut shells on the floor. I forgot the name. And now Toys R Us will be another large buidling in that lot empty. I would think that spot would be good since it's in the mall area. Was it Laredo's or something like that?

Since Shasho seems to have a pulse of what's happening commercially in southern Maryland. Is there any renewed investor interest in Indian Head ever since it was designated an "Opportunity Zone" by the Federal Government?

Drive straight down from the heart of the nation's capital into the center of this little haven of hopelessness you will find in Indian Head a place that, at best, dazzles you with the lightest sprinkle of merchants and people bustling about, if any. The common sight is the many shuttered storefronts one after another.

Despite Indian Head's dying and bleak outlook for some time now, it seems to be a place ripe for potential. And really, with the right perspective an appreciation of our Creator's handiwork appears to reveal an opposite future for the taking. In that the land is lush with green rolling hills filled with colorful deciduous woods and Charles County Sheriff's Deputies ready to radar ambush you with every dip and rise of the road. Sorry, it's true, but okay, I relent -- they're keeping us safe. On three sides waters from the Mattawoman Creek to the greater Potomac River just aches to be adored from her shores.

Within this beauty you could just imagine the impressive array of steel, glass and stone new construction of office buildings and waterfront facilities, restaurants, retail establishments and engaging public areas adorning Indian Head's landscape like precious gemstones set in a crown of gold. Any steps toward such a realization will beckon talented people everywhere desirous to better and breathe new life into a city hungry to come alive. It would be a momentous era for southern Maryland.

I know, a bit much. Romantic even. But this is what I see every time I pass by Indian Head. A possibility for a new hope, a real opportunity. And maybe, just maybe, there is enough incentive with this recent economic designation to reverse Indian Head's fortunes.

That said, have you heard of any takers?

Chris, what do you think of considering a Potbelly or Cookout restaurant for the area? I think both would do extremely well in waldorf. Cookout has the best burgers on the east coast!! 😀

Any chance anyone can fill in the rest of O’Donnell Lake Park with restaurants? It’s only need over 14 years since that plan died on the vine. Maybe a microbrewery, a decent seafood place, something with a good steak? Ma Be woo some VA restaurants, like Sweetwater Tavern, or something Alexandria Restaurant Partners—Volas, virtue Feed & Grain, etc. No more national chains. Waldorf is fast becoming “that place on the way to Leonardtown/California/Lexington Park.” Someone should take over that empty restaurant in the mall circle (formerly Lonestar).

Hi, what's going in the building near toys r us,in waldorf at st charles mall, it used to be a steakhouse. I noticed a sold sign on it today.

Definitely we need new mall with better stores, Wholefood or Fresh Fields will be nice.

I'm sorry I was not being notified of new comments so i had not been responding.

Water parks and go cart tracks need to run all year if they are going to survive, especially if there is no other major attraction to the area. I agree it would be nice to have but costly to run.

I have not seen any push to Indian head because of these new incentives yet but its early. I have posted since that Nammo which is a large company is moving to the Indian Head area. Hopefully others will follow along.

No plan for toys r us yet. its up for lease by an out of state company.

I've been trying to get restaurants to O'Donnell but they have it in their head that they need to be on the highway. If people are hungry they will find you.

any idea how many locations are slated for MD?

Chris Shasho said...

I dont know what the final number will be because they keep changing. We were supposed to have two others in the area and they dropped them.

Anonymous said...

Intersection is definitely not the worst lol but definitely a bad location in general

Unknown said...

It was Lone Star.

There is quite a bit of confusion about the Lidl construction among nearby residents since there is s sign for Westchester apartment leasing on the property. Any insights?

Chris Shasho said...

That's a sign for the apartments next door. It says now leasing. It shouldn't even be there because its not their property. No housing going on this property.

Wegman's, whole foods in Waldorf and Bryan's road Maryland please

Chris Shasho said...

I'm sorry but they will never come. Not enough people here.

Martha said...

Is there an opening date for the Lidl now?

Chris Shasho said...

We have not heard anything yet on opening date.

Anonymous said...

What’s is Nammo? Is anything coming to Bryan’s Road, Indian Head area?

Chris Shasho said...

Nammo is a large government contractor. They are looking to locate in Indian head close to the base. We are working on a location for them.

We once went to the Christmas Market in the building where the park is in Indian Head. We had 2 little dogs on pouches. After they took our entry fee money, they asked us to leave because of the dogs. On they way out, the lady said that our entry fee will benefit the community. LADY, WE WERE JUST ASKED TO LEAVE YOUR STUPID CHRISTMAS MARKET. We were so disgusted by the sheer audacity we just left and didn’t care about whatever we paid. Ask me if it makes any difference to me what happens to the Town of Indian Head.

Unknown said...

They should've put a Wegmans in Waldorf. SMFH

Unknown said...

I agree with you 100%

Chris Shasho said...

Wegmans doesn't want to be here because we have no daytime population. That is what happens when over half your population leaves the area to work.

Unknown said...

Put go carts in when Sears goes out.

So so true.

At first I was confused why Wegmansis not in Charles County..There is a big enough population during the day, especially on th weekends. From what I've expirenced. If they had it years ago, it would have been doing very well. Attracting from all over Charles County and even St. Marys and calvert lines. Many people would choose them over the other stores. Then, I'm thinking, Charles County lacks a lot of good jobs. PG has more jobs and so does NOVA.

I will say I'm confused what they put a store in Landover area in PG. It lacks in selection compared to Alexandria, VA, Abingdon, MD or Cockeysville, MD. I just love wegmans and have driven to the one in Alexandria but I prefer Abingdon/Bel Air, MD the best. The food at wegmans is is way better than the stores in Charles County. When I have bought groceries from Safeway, Giant, Shoppers, Food lion and even Target, they seem to lack what I like. Safeway, Giant and Target in La Plata seem to have better quality than Waldorf and the Giant in Accokeek (PG).

Lidl isnt that great to me. I do not understand the hype. Aldi's really is not my type of store. Moms is nice but too small, expensive and a lack in selection. So, just like work, sometimes you have to drive far for better. Eventually move away for better.

Bryan's road is just... idk even know anymore
Looks awful. That safeway should have lasted but that service was atrocious. Food lion lacks in a lot of quality and there are too many gas stations. Bryans road still has potential and I hope they act on it soon.

I like La Plata but not that much more than Waldorf. Charles County is growing and that's nice, but the mall and quality of restaurants and grocery stores is subpar. I do not have a great paying job, but I would like better quality in what I do buy and what I see while driving by. I do not care for venturing out and about Charles County anymore. Not much to be desirable and too much sprawl.

I have lived here since I was 10 (in my twenties now) and this county is not for everyone; certainly not for me for more reasons I will not discuss.
