Harry Nice Bridge Replacement Moving Forward

Governor Hogan announced that the Harry Nice Bridge will be replaced beginning in FY 2020 and completed in 2023.  Estimated cost is around $765 Million.  It will be a 4 lane bridge with a pedestrian and bike lane separated by a barrier.  Many thanks to Governor Hogan for getting this done.  As Governor Hogan stated in his speech local lawmakers in Charles County tried to stop this from happening.

We've needed this for a long time. Why would local lawmakers oppose this?

According to the BaltSun article on the announcement, the political dispute is about how to fund the project and who gets credit for it, not whether the project itself is needed.

According to his speech local legislators were "working strongly against the overwhelming desire of their constituents to build the bridge" and "They played political games by voting to delay and interfere and potentially kill our ongoing efforts to replace this bridge" This was also quoted in the Maryland independent.

This isn't the first time local government has stopped a road project.

Maybe the Gov needs to do some investigating and get them removed. Chas co has lost several businesses to Va due to their corrupt ways. Vie De France and Macaroni Grill are two.

Thank you Govenor Hogan!!!

I'm glad he did this, but for all those people thanking the governor, he initially opposed it, and vetoed the original legislation for the bridge. So, take his blaming others with a grain of salt.

Hi Chris,
This seemed like the most logical place to ask a question, so here it goes.
I did not see any posts about the land clearing at Branch Ave north bound at routes 5 and 381. Is this the traffic circle project or, something else? Thanks for keeping Southern Maryland informed.

Yes that is part of the new road plan. The cleared land is owned by the state highway.
