September 2022 Updates

Looks like everyone's back to school now.  Fall is just about here.  The lawn is full of leaves already so not looking forward to cleaning that up all the time.  I do like having a holiday to look forward to each month starting with my birthday in September!  Family gatherings are always a welcome time for me.  We need to spend as much time with them as we can.

Popeyes has opened in the Fox Run Shopping Center in Prince Frederick.  75 Harrow Ln, Prince Frederick, MD 20678  I missed this one by a week.

Hobby Lobby is coming to Waldorf at the Waldorf Marketplace.  It will take over the former Homegoods and TJ Maxx space.  Look for it to open in Fall 2023!

Fiesta Tex Mex is coming to Waldorf Marketplace across the parking lot from Grill no 13.  No word on opening date.

Takasima Sushi, Rice & Noodles is now open in the St. Charles Town Center Mall. California Tortilla is coming soon to the food court as well.

Planet Fitness is coming soon to the La Plata Shopping Center.  It will take over the former fitness center space.

  1. Trader Joe’s is requesting recommendations for where to open stores. Chris, I have read on your site the reasons why they haven’t opened one in Charles County, but it couldn’t hurt if people submitted this request, who knows, it may work. The site was posted on the Nextdoor App, which copied info from TJ Fearless Flyer paper:

  2. After submitting the above request to Trader Joe’s, they sent me this auto reply:
Thank you for your interest in a Trader Joe’s store – it matters to us. We’ve received your request and will share it with our real estate team for consideration.
It may be a long shot, but I remain hopeful.

    1. I’m not the expert, Chris is, but it seems like the only supermarkets that really have the resources to expand in this region in the current environment are Aldi, Lidl, and Amazon Fresh. I would be happy with any of these in Charlotte Hall just to reduce overcrowding at the Food Lion.

  3. Walmart Charlotte Hall not that I want it

  4. There is no walmart coming to charlotte hall. Where is that coming from?

Doesnt hurt to ask again for traders.

    1. On again/off again rumors from a employee of the county. Believe me, I don’t want it. I don’t want Charlotte Hall to build up too much. Another grocery store, such as Trader Joe’s, would be nice for Charlotte Hall. Maybe go where McKays is?

  5. Calvert County has built up quite a bit over the years. Yet we still don't have a Best Buy. Every surrounding county has one. A Best Buy would make things complete...for me at least.

  6. Calvert County needs a Best Buy. The surrounding counties have one. I've hoped for two things in the county; a T-Mobile (which we just got), and a Best Buy. That would make everything complete...for me at least.

    1. Best Buys are slowly going out of business because a lot of people buy their electronics online. They may not be looking to expand.

  7. I have lived in Charlotte Hall for over 40 years. That Walmart thing comes up quite often its not going to happen. Now I would love to see a Aldi come to Charlotte Hall. Lets work on that Chris.

  8. No Aldi in charlotte hall. Still hoping against hope concerning royal farms.

  9. There will be no Walmart, Cheesecake Factory, Best Buy or any large major retailer in Charlotte Hall. There will be in all likelihood a Royal Farms ,Starbucks and Chipotle. When they spin that wheel of fortune it could land on another fast food restaurant, nail salon or another Chinese restaurant or all of the above.

  10. Hi Chris,

Can you tell me what is being built on Rt 227 next to the Army Reserve Center? Thanks

  11. On 227 is a Copart. They auction off cars online. No onsite sales. Its like a big parking lot.

  12. Chris do you know when the Jersey Mike's Subs is supposed to open in Waldorf? It seems like it's taking a while.

  13. Looks like they are close but I haven't seen any opening date posted. there was an orange sticker on the door today so they haven't passed all their county permits yet.

  14. Any update on of CAVA is keeping the same location. They say they are targeting opening early 2023. Thanks!

  15. Chris, any progress on the O’Donnell Lake restaurant park that was started almost 20 years ago? Just drove through and saw your property sale sign and it reminded me that there were supposed to be three more restaurants there in addition to Boston’s. Boston’s is run down, filthy, and in disrepair. It’s needs a facelift. The staff is great, but ownership is slowly killing it.

  16. Chris, I guess this is a little bit outside of your territory, but do you have any idea what they’re building in Dahlgren on the vacant lots between the Petco part of the shopping center and Murphy USA, Wendys, Starbucks etc? Thanks

  17. I believe if all registers are open at food lion there wouldnt be any overcrowding. That being said another grocery store would help so food lion wouldn't be a monopoly.

  18. In Dahlgreen looks like one site is for a chipotle.

  19. O Donnell lake has been under contract on and off for different things. Its hard to push these users to a location off Crain Highway. They don't believe anyone will find them. We can do lots of other things besides restaurants on the pad sites.

    1. Restaurants on the pad sites are what the community continues to request.

  20. I thought Cava was going to use the building but now they fenced it off which makes me think it could be a teardown. Guess we will see.

  21. Hey Chris. Is it true that St.Mary’s is getting a Costco?

  22. Just wondering if this restaurant would be interested in coming down here. :) They offer a lot, would love to see it in a location that is already built and is empty vs. building something new.

  23. Have not heard the Costco rumor.

Eggspectation looks interesting but has a very small amount of locations so far. I dont see us being on their radar until they grow more.

  25. Need Franchisers for many of these stores.

  26. How about a planet fitness or anytime fitness in Charlotte hall.

  27. I heard Sean Earley signed the paperwork to buy the Hollywood McKays store but not the Charlotte Hall one. Any updates on this?

  28. Hello,
Can we get First Watch restaurant in Waldorf or La Plata? We need more restaurants in Charles County.

  29. The McKays in Hollywood has a sign saying they’re hiring for a store called “Bradford’s Neighborhood Market”

  30. Why these companies allowed to be so racist looking past a majority black area?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Why when something doesn't go your way is it immediately "racist"? People such as yourself have made that word have no useful meaning any longer.

      Delete
    2. Chris has said so many times we don’t have the population and daytime traffic in SO MD for a lot of the stores we all desperately want. It’s not about race. I’m sure population size, median household income, crime all play a factor in businesses deciding.

      Delete
    3. Leave crime out the equation. Waldorf/ SOMD crime rates are not high compared to other cities of similar in size.

    4. Not addressing Waldorf specifically on ANY of the reasons stated.

    5. Racist is a word and words don't lose their meanings. It's typically people who have never experienced racism or believe it doesn't exist who tell others the word is losing its meaning. When someone says "demographics" race and income are included in those demographics.

  31. I see that the parcel site where the new McKays in Charlotte Hall was to be built is under contract. Can you share what the plans are for that site?

  32. Cant comment yet on what may happen with mckays property or what mr earley is doing.

Calvert does not want big box stores there.

First watch is mainly a breakfast place and they said in the past we dont have a good enough crowd for that time. Im pretty sure we keep sending them sites regardless.

  33. Chris, you are doing a great job keeping us informed on what is happening in our area. It is to bad people are using this site to vent their frustrations on race but I say if the shoe fits then wear it and find another site so we can enjoy what this blog is for. Any word on when the multi residential development next to Winegardner is suppose to break ground?

  34. Lets keep things cordial. I don't want to have to start removing comments.

I've been watching the area but have not seen anything about it. PG from what I've heard, is apparently moving slower than charles with permits.
