Walmart has pulled their proposal to build a new super center on the former Embassy Dairy land behind Sonic in Pinefield. There was a lot of opposition against it moving forward due to concerns for the Mattawoman creek as well as opposition from local unions and residents. Similar to what happened in La Plata. We will have to see how this will affect the Western Parkway being completed. It is unknown at this time if they will move to another location or out of the county completely. The land owners still have a meeting scheduled on 7/26 to apply for a large box user that the public can attend. Check the county website for correct time and date.
UPDATE: county meeting has now been been cancelled.
UPDATE 10-28-16: The land has been sold to another developer for a different transit oriented mixed use.
Would they move to the gleneagles area; is there available space there?
ReplyDeleteNot a good move. Love how people keep blocking progress like the one in La Plata. Guess they'll end up building one in Brandywine right over the county line so we can give up yet another business and tax dollars to PG County. You know a great place to put a Super Walmart would be where The Peterson Company was going to build the Waldorf Towne Center that never happened.
ReplyDeleteNot good but it shows a lack luster economy in the area.
ReplyDeleteAnd if they decide to build look at Brandywine where Giant was to build
As far as Western Parkway expansion, wasn't that supposed to be completed some time ago?
I am glad. Current Walmart can remodel I believe. Laplata did and I believe it wirked for them. I dont care for either of the Charles County Walmarts. The care of the stores is not wuite there in my opinion. Mgmt and personnel who work there need to show a little more concern for their stores. I pay to go across into Va. Worth it for me even though further away. So much nicer over there.
ReplyDeleteI agree; although the la plata Walmart remodeled and expanded it is already showing signs of distress:) it's just a fact the farther away you go the better the Walmart. Even if they build in brandywine it will not take long for it to be in poor condition because of the volume of customers. I really need the county to clean up/tear down those vacant properties coming into Waldorf on 301! I'd rather see baren land than those vacant buildings just falling apart. We have to do better
ReplyDeleteI believe walmart was shown the old stardust site but it didnt work for them. We now have that property up for ground lease as well as the wigwam site.
ReplyDeleteIf walmart was going to build on the chaney property they would have taken down the old waldorf restaurnat and hotel. There are still tenants in the hotel.
The Clinton, MD Walmart was just approved by PG County for conversion to a full Supercenter with grocery. I believe it is to undergo major renovation and expansion.
ReplyDeletethat a great decision i am agree with Walmart this decisions!
ReplyDeletePerhaps that was a bad location but I can't get over how the residents of this county cut off their noses to spite their face. I would rather pay the $6 to drive over the bridge into VA to shop in that sparkly, well-stocked Super Walmart than set foot in either of the ones in Charles County. Gas is cheaper there too.
ReplyDeleteI was so in hopes for a Walmart Super Center in Waldorf. The present day Walmart in Waldorf is a total joke. It's old, run down, dank, and dirty. Most of the time the things I need when I do go there out of desperation aren't in stock. It amazes me how the manager can keep his or her job. I've refused to give that particular store my business as I refuse to patronize something that run down. I've been using Walmart online for years now. It is refreshing to see Walmart Super Centers in Kentucky when I go there on vacation. Then I come back home to Waldorf to the eyesore Walmart here in town. Walmart cooperation should be embarrassed to keep that old run down dinosaur in business.
