LA Fitness will have its grand opening on January 1, 2016. A preview center has opened by the Men's Warehouse. Reports have come in that they will not have a basketball court like was previously told to us. There will be a pool.
UPDATE: Opening will occur either 12/18/15 or 12/21/15 due to inspections.
UPDATE: LA Fitness is now open.
A basketball court will not be available as they opted for the pool instead. This is very disappointing and contradicts the information you provided earlier. The county needs an all day recreation center which houses basketball courts, weights, pools, etc. To not have a full recreation center in the area is beyond me.
ReplyDeleteI went the preview center to gather information & possiblely signup ... When I inquired about the basketball & racquetball courts & was informed that they would not have them .. I was disappointed & did not signup and will continue to look into other options
ReplyDeleteThat's too bad that they have changed some of the proposed features.
ReplyDeleteDo they not have basketball available at the Capital Clubhouse?
Here is information provided on the County parks and Recreation website on indoor basketball: http://www.charlescountyparks.com/recreation/adult-indoor-sports
The options are ridiculously limited for adult pick up games in the county. The county only offers 1 or 2 (if lucky) days of the week to play at middle school gyms, etc. for a period of 1-1.5 h (normally late evening starting at 8 pm) at a nominal fee. This is unacceptable for a county of this size while counties such as PG and those in Virginia have fully operated rec centers to meet the needs of their residents. Most of us just commute to Virginia. I heard that Sport and Health recently closed as well (which housed a basketball court). Perhaps the county could use that facility and turn it into a fully operational rec. center. I'm surprised that residents haven't addressed this issue to the appropriate parties.
ReplyDeleteI went to LA Fitness' Preview Center and learned that the reason why they didn't add the basketball was that one of their fellow tenants wasn't willing to give up their square footage to LAF. Now it was foolish that LAF promised something that they couldn't guarantee. But LAT facilities are going to be far and away superior to any other gyms in this area. I was a member of Sports and Health Club for years and paid over $40/month and for what? Old cardio equipment? Dilapidated locker area? It was especially galling to see the facilicities of other Sports and Healths in the DC area and realize how ghetto the Waldorf club was. So with LAT coming, I don't think it should be surprising that Sports and Health Club went under. LAT's price would have been competitive with better facilities than Sports and Health. Even still I think only Sports and Health Club is on the same level as LAT in Waldorf. The gym at the Capital Clubhouse is cheaper but the offerings are limited. Very limited classes. No spinning. Everything dark and cramped. Industrial looking. Planet Fitness just has cardio equipment, no classes. So yes. No basketball court. But the swimming pool, whirlpool, sauna, huge spinning room, huge classroom make up for it. What other gym in this are has a swimming pool? Whirlpool? None. What other gym in this area has nice premium lockers, instead of high school metal looking ones? Nothing around here. I'm looking forward to LAT coming late Dec/early Jan. It will be way way better than anything else in Waldorf....
ReplyDeleteHighly disappointed in the fact that there will not be a basketball court in the facility. With Sport and Health closed the county basically has limited places to play pick up games at. This is unacceptable for the county residents.
ReplyDeleteI was told that gym only was 30k sqft as opposed to the 38k sqft they believed they were getting. They didn't opt for the pool instead of the basketball court. They just no longer had the square feet for basketball or racquetball. They are doing specials now. Single rates too better than online. Just ask for jasmine Swann at the preview center. The singles special ends Saturday she said.
ReplyDeleteDon't get me wrong, I am happy and pretty sure most of the residents are, that LA Fitness is coming to the area. I would be skeptical regarding the state of the art facilities such as the whirlpool, sauna, locker rooms, etc. because of what happened to other gym facilities in the area. Look at the Gold's Gym (now Waldorf Fitness Center) and Sport and Health when they first opened and take a look at the state they are in now. Will the LA Fitness go down a similar route as the aforementioned? I certainly hope not but wouldn't be surprised because promises initially were never fulfilled by LAF from the onset. We moved here from northern virginia and have been residents for 4 years now. The difference is so contrasting. The lack of amenities and negligence from county officials here is telling. Like others have mentioned, the options to play basketball, racquetball, etc. are limited for a county of this size. Not everyone is interested in a pool especially when winter is right around the corner. With so many gyms around the area now the county is even less likely to build a solid rec. center for residents to meet everyone's need.
ReplyDeleteDo you think there is something that can be done to get our amenities to be more like northern Virginia?
DeleteSo what's the deal, why can't the county get a rec center? And why aren't there any YMCA's in Charles County?
ReplyDeleteIt takes money to build rec centers. Northern Virginia has these because they have the jobs and money that Charles County lacks. Bring more jobs to the county and everything else will come.
ReplyDeleteLA fitness is open now. They opened Friday.
ReplyDeletet's great that LA Fitness has opened, and offers "oh joy" a pool. Doesn't the public have use of the North Point Pool and isn't there a Mommy and Me type of facility available for beginning swimmer. It's absolutely ridiculous that there is not one recreation center here in Charles County that doesn't offer a gym for our youth. With so many kids that play middle school and high school basketball its a darn shame there is no dedicated gym space like there is for hockey and soccer. And then folks wonder why crime has risen. A great prototype for Charles County would be the James Lee Recreation Center in Falls Church, VA. Let get these youth something to do besides hanging out at the mall! I've been to a couple of meetings several years ago regarding getting a dedicated gym space in the area and always in the end, it has been voted down.
