Happy May! Happy Mothers Day! Its also national hamburger, salad and barbecue month! Anyway I hope we can get some weekends that are all sunshine. Its hard to get all the yardwork done in one day. Watching the comments on the local news lately drives me crazy. Have pride in your community. Work to improve it. Harbor Freight has signed up to lease a portion of the former Weis space at the Laurel Glenn Shopping Center on Alton Lane in California, MD. No proposed opening date yet.
Dodah's Kitchen is now open in the Smallwood Village Shopping Center serving Vegan soul food and deserts. #152 Smallwood Village. This is their forth Maryland location.
Standard Sweets is set to open May 20th at 29251 Three Notch Road in Mechanicsville.

DeleteIt closed about 18yrs ago, sat vacant, opened under another name, closed again, reopened under another name and closed again. It’s opened up like four times and closed. This is probably the fifth attempt. It’s in a terrible location to get in/out of. Had some crab legs there in 2004 or 2005 and they got served half frozen.

How is is possible that a place like California Maryland can get places like Harris Teeter, Brass Tap, Super Walmart and Super Target yet a place like Waldorf can’t seem to attract these same businesses? I understand everyone has an opinion but my questions are to possibly gain insight and ways to change this. So if possible are there meetings available to attend or persons to contact in order to start a conversation that goes beyond just complaining on the Nextdoor app? Any and all feedback is appreciated.
The reason is because they have office buildings and the military base. People commute into St. Mary’s county for work. It’s not very interesting out there except that small stretch of the few stores they have.

DeleteSometimes its a matter of space. Target had no room to get bigger in waldorf. They have pushed the max space in La Plata. SuperWalmart tried to get approved twice in charles county. once in waldorf and laplata. The unions and environmental groups came out against it. People started to make claims that if they move that the old stores would remain vacant even when we had a plan for them.

It is getting hard to just keep sitting by silently while others grow and we just build houses and poor money into their communities.

ReplyDeleteThere is a proposal to put a solid waste transfer station (basically indoor trash dump) on Old Washington Rd near the Walmart on Acton. The develop isn’t disclosing what areas the trash will be coming from but will be from outside the county. Will make traffic even worse with 400k tons/yr of garbage being trucked in. Please send letters or attend Biard of Appeals meeting June 27 before it’s too late.

ReplyDeleteThey want to go to St. Marys apparently and protest the Harris Teeter etc. because they've decided those stores are down there but not in Waldorf because you know... "racism".
DeleteI know you like the comment section because there are some legit and sometimes bright comments and questions, but its more or less become a place for nonsensical, made up accusations of any time someone doesn't get what they want its prejudice based.
Charles County administrators actively pursuing high-end grocery stores. Most high-end grocery stores think the county population is too small has been the feedback, however Harris Teeter is looking to expand into Southern Maryland, not sure the time table. Harris Teeter's buildings in St Marys and Calvert are new and built exactly to their specifications. No, they don't want to be in whatever vacant space you can name in Waldorf/La Plata because that building is not to their specifications. A developer will have to build a space that fits what they want (not what the people on here want) and that fits their criteria.
ReplyDeleteAnd why do people come on here every month and claim that racism is why certain businesses aren't in Waldorf and Brandywine when those places have tons of businesses that aren't in St Marys or Calvert. And most of the places people on here like to name off that Calvert/ St Mary's DO have that Charles doesn't are chains that have no local connection to the area and could care less about the people who live in the communities they serve. I guess these chains validate people about where they live.
Reading your post gives me pause because like so many others have stated the same narrative you are pushing. So if you are having confusion on how race factors in than all you would need to do is read the news or read statistics, because in every case like that of Waldorf/ La Plata the common denominator always ends up being race. Charles County one of the top two highest median incomes in Maryland. Charles County continues to add homes and more homes with endless amounts of land. Waldorf is subjected to endless amounts of traffic and oh one other thing employers are facing the reality that the hybrid model of employment is here to stay which means more people are home. Yet places like California or Dunkirk continue to build infrastructure. I say all that to say we have heard the bedroom community argument or the not enough people in this area yet I am struggling to see how businesses in this day and age are saying no to money or is it just black dollars that are scaring businesses away. So my question to all the nay sayers is what other excuse will be added to justify why businesses are not coming to Charles County? 1+1 always equals race in America. (Exact specifications for a store is a laughable argument on any level since we seem to have endless land for residential developers but not legitimate commercial growth)

DeleteI know you don’t want to hear it but Waldorf and LaPlata are bedroom communities. And that changes everything. St Mary’s county is a lot of stay at home moms. ALOT. And that changes the dynamic of how the family lives. Families with stay at home moms lead completely different lives and this is the family that Harris Teeter typically attracts. White, black, Asian, whatever. Race doesn’t matter. Just the family dynamics do. And the building that is available. Look at our town. Guys, I’ve lived in Waldorf for 40 years. Seeing how sad the mall shopping center is, the Smallwood shopping center and the pine field shopping center, I wouldn’t want to open my Wegmans or Harris Teeter here either. Can you blame them? It’s a bedroom community and all people do here is have their groceries delivered, go to work and sleep. And they don’t seem to care about how shitty their city is turning into. Look at the mall for crying out loud. You really think Wegmans wants to be here?

ReplyDeleteThe brass tap opening in California, MD is another example/further evidence of Waldorf and La Plata becoming those towns you drive through to get to the better parts of SOMD. Charles county is terrible for business. The county commissioners attract mediocre options for us.
ReplyDeleteThere are fine restaurants and other things within a short drive from Waldorf ( Alexandria Arlington , Fairfax, National Harbor and DC) to other parts of the DMV, similar to the Brass Tap and others. Better grocery shopping choices to me, is at the top of the list for Charles County, not worried about the rest.
