September / October Updates

 Updated 10/31/18

Burlington is now open in its new location at Waldorf Shoppers Word.  Its a much brighter store with a better layout.

Now that Burlington has moved they can begin construction on new tenants Aldi and Harbor Freight Tools that will take over two thirds of Burlington's former space.   No projected opening date yet but I'm thinking early spring 2019.  There will be one additional space for another tenant.  The shopping center is also working on a new facade for the buildings.

Shark Bar and Seafood Restaurant is scheduled to open this fall Late October in the Pinefield South Shopping Center in Waldorf.

The former Lonestar will become a Middle Eastern restaurant.  There is no opening date set.

Kahn Grill will open in the former Bucca space in the St. Charles Town Center Mall.  It is supposed to open this fall.

Fosters grill is looking to open a new location in La Plata in the former Red Oak space by Roy Rogers.  Looking at early 2019 opening.

Urban BBQ has closed in La Plata

Rite Aid closed in La Plata due to Walgreen's buying the company.

K-Mart in Prince Frederick will close due to Sears Bankruptcy.

Cafe Rio has closed in Waldorf

Ulta Beauty is coming to the Wildewood Shopping Center in California, MD.  It will take over the former Dollar General and some retail next to it.

  1. I just recently heard about the waldorf Urban Redevolpment project. Is this still happening/in the works. Looks interesting.

  2. I talked about it in April of 2016. Put redevelopment in the search bar and you will find my blog about it. I'm waiting to see something happen. Right now the zoning change has killed some of owners chances of renting their spaces because some uses are not allowed in that area anymore such as auto repair.

  3. Any reason for the closing of Urban Barbq? Didn't they open and close the one off of Berry Rd like within a month? Do you know if they are corporate owned like Fuddruckers and Cheeseburger in Paradise were supposedly owned by the same corp.

  4. Any idea what's going on with KFC? Are they closing temporarily or is it permanent?

  5. Urban BBQ could not keep up on their rent. So that means not enough business.

Yes Fuddruckers and cheeseburger are owned by Luby's

You mean Spoons on Berry rd? They couldn't get enough good help.

Which KFC? Its hard to get info from corporate stores.

  8. Chris,

Did the Timothy Creek Development property in Brandywine sell because I see they have completed half the road going by the old HH Gregg Distribution center?

Any rumors on when the property formally owned by Chaney Co that was going to have the new Walmart is going to start construction? Have they found any anchor tenants like a Harris Teeter?

  9. The road was going in regardless to help get the locals off of 301 and help with traffic. I have not heard about any development starting on the residential parcels.

They are still looking for anchors. The supermarkets aren't doing a lot of expanding from what we gathered at the last shopping center convention. The county still needs to finish the western parkway expansion.

  10. For KFC - it looks like the one in Waldorf is closed at the moment? Their parking lot is torn up and doesn't look like anything is happening inside?

  11. Any updates regarding what's moving into the old Safeway building in Bryans Road?

  12. What happened to the Rite-Aid in La Plata?

    ReplyDelete
  13. They have not had any luck with a new anchor store. They had asked the county to allow an indoor storage facility to take part of the center but i think it was turned down.

The rite aid i think fell to the fact there are too many pharmacies in the area. I have not heard anything else.

  14. Saw a sign on the former Riye Aid in LaPlata that said Walgreens.

As far as Western Charles, until something big happens, I believe you will still see business leave. The county hasn’t really helped with any improvements and most of the residents act like Indian Head and Bryan’s Road exists.

  15. Hi Chris, do you know if they are remodeling the KFC in Waldorf off of 301 near the Taco Bell or did they close for good?

    ReplyDelete
  16. I believe its a remodel but I have not heard anything about it.

  17. Rite aid closed because walgreens bought them. They dont need both in town.

  18. Hi Chris, I seen a sign for "Waldorf station" in front of the empty lot where the Waldorf motel and restaurant used to be. Does that mean they are about to begin construction?

  19. They may just be advertising for the property. I don't think they have any solid tenants yet. They are trying to get different tenants and its been tough.

  20. Hello Chris,
I saw discussion about supermarkets above, has anyone reached out about a Publix? From what I have read they are looking in the DC area to expand and the one in Spotsylvania has been doing great. Thanks!

  21. Hi Chris - thanks so much for your blog. It is so very, very helpful! I have a question about the big round structure going up on the south side of 301 before you get to the Brandywine light. I have no idea what that is, but am curious. I tried searching the comments, but "big round structure" didn't work too well for me. :o| thanks much!

  22. That new round structure is going to be a new WSSC water tower

  23. No interest from publix for our area currently.

Thanks for the answer to the water tower.

  24. Chris. Sincce they openened in Camp Springs, any plans from Royal Farms to continue moving south? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  25. Chris,
I heard a rumor about a Mission BBQ coming to Waldorf. Any truth to this rumor?

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  26. Royal farms has looked in the area but finding a suitable spot that meets all their criteria is a challenge.

Mission BBQ may be working on a location. However out of respect to the people involved I can not say where until a deal is signed off and they confirm it with me. As of right now nothing is final.

  27. Question what happened to plans for the Southern Maryland indoor sports complex in white plains? I remember hearing about this in 2017 however haven’t seen anything more on this.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Cafe Rio in Waldorf is closed. Anyone know why?

    ReplyDelete
  29. The southern Maryland sports complex - I have seen no activity from them. I just looked at their facebook page and nothing has changed. They leased some space from us behind 84 lumber but thats about it. Dottery Washington who is currently running for a seat on the CC board of education was the leader of the complex development.

Low sales was the reason for closing cafe rio.

  30. Does anyone know when Ulta is opening?

    ReplyDelete
  31. The sports complex has done a lot of expensive fundraising for years for something that only has an empty space. It has promoted it with drawings of a glamorous "for everyone" establishment and many locals have given support, how do they know it isn't a scam? Not sure who looks into that kind of thing but I feel better asking you since you are on top of things for the county. Thank you for all the updates.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes the concept of the complex has been around for a long time and there is nothing to show for it. I don't believe it will ever happen. Who can look into it? I'm really not sure. Do I think it's a scam? Probably not but they aren't managing it well.

  33. Hello Chris. In Brandywine, any idea what is being built on Missouri Ave. and an opening date? Also, construction is beginning on the corner of Brandywine Rd. And Mattawoman across from new medical center. Any idea what that is going to be? I’m REALLY hoping for a convienient store/ gas station in the area. Thank you very much and your blog is AMAZING!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. There is an aquatic and rec center under construction on Missouri ave. Not sure what’s going on Brandywine Road and Mattawoman other than the road expansion that connects to Brandywine Crossing. Thanks for the comments. I appreciate it.

  35. Chris, have you heard if Sardi's Pollo A La Brasa is coming to Waldorf area? This would be a great addition to the area.

    ReplyDelete
  36. No I have not heard anything about them for the area.

  37. Hi Chris, I hope you enjoyed the hoildays, do you have any information on the opening of the Shark Bar in Waldorf or if it has already opened, also what's going on with KFC in Waldorf off of Old Washington have they closed for good?

  38. Chris, we have not seen any news updates in a while. I really enjoy seeing your posts to see what is changing in our area. Happy Holidays and be safe on the roads this winter.
