College of Southern Maryland Hughesville Campus

The College of Southern Maryland will be breaking ground on their new 50 acre campus in the next few months.  The campus is centrally located to help serve the tri-county area.  Part of the campus will house the Center for Trades and Energy which deals with HVAC, Electric, Welding, Carpentry, etc. that is currently in a smaller building in the St. Charles Industrial Park.  The new center will double in size to 40,000 square feet.  Other buildings that may follow are Health Sciences and a Fine Arts Center.  In 1997 Hughesville was designated as a priority funding area by the state to help with economic growth.  The new campus will benefit not only the students but the entire Hughesville area.  The area is also home to SMECO, The Southern Maryland Association of Realtors and the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland.

Proposed Walmart Supercenter for Waldorf

I have been asked a few times about what is going on with Waldorf getting a Walmart super center.  Currently there is a plan for it to go into the Waldorf Station project at the North end of Charles County where the old embassy dairy facility was.  You can read about the general plan for Waldorf Station here: http://www.waldorfstation.com .  Well besides the backlash it got like when La Plata was trying to get one, the developers of the land which is Chaney Enterprises has to go in to the county for a change to the original plan.  The building that they want to build is larger than what is currently allowed for the zoning so it needs a special exception.  Also the bigger building will require moving the proposed western parkway expansion (in yellow below) to make it go around the back of the Walmart (orange line).  That brings it closer to the Mattawoman Creek which of course will upset other people.  So currently its into the county board of appeals and they are going over every detail about the building and how it will effect the area, look, etc.  I believe there are a series of hearings for this and you can watch them on the county website. http://www.charlescounty.org/apps/mediacenter/public/listEventsPublic.jsp

We have nothing to do with this project so I don't get any inside updates.  If anything new is put out to the public I will try to add it here.    Please remember that if you comment I have to approve it before it shows up on the page.  I'm trying to keep any spam off of here as much as possible.

AAA Travel / Auto Service Brandywine

AAA will open a Travel and Auto service center next to the Wawa in Brandywine, MD on McKendree Road.  Construction has already begun.  Look for an opening in the Fall of 2015 or sooner.  AAA is currently located in the Brandywine Crossing Shopping Center but does not have a Auto service center.  The above picture shows their typical setup but may not be what the final Brandywine location looks like.
